Happy Thanksgiving 2009!
Seems like just yesterday when I was wishing you Happy New Year 2009. I don't know if time flies faster as you get older, but these past few years have just flown by. Unfortunately these have been tough times for too many of us. The economy and the financial climate in the country continue to cause each of us some concern.. We hate to turn on the TV news, with their gloom & doom. But that being said most of us have to count our blessings that we are working and healthy. Hopefully we are lucky enough to be surrounded by loving family or friends.
As most of you know, Mickey and I are blessed with a wonderful family that continues to grow and are a constant source of joy for us. Our office family Lorraine, May & Mona continue to enjoy the love of family and their friendships that have grown from working together. Recently, a previous employee, Gosia has been filling in & helping out when we need her.
You Can Keep Those Teeth Forever
Keeping up our regular checkups & focusing on prevention , rather than treatment, help keep our teeth throughout our lives. In March of 2008, our office took a major step to be on the cutting edge of current periodontal therapy. At that time we included laser gum treatments to our arsenal to combat gum disease. After extensive research and training, our staff has become proficient in providing state of the art laser gum treatments. Many of our patients have already benefited from these treatments and we are very pleased with the results of this non-surgical treatment. Do not hestate to ask if this treatment is appropriate for you.
Our patients have also benefited from our state of the art tooth whitening system ....Zoom. May has done many one hour "laser" light whitening treatments followed by take home touch up trays for you to maintain your new bright smile for years. Hopefully the news for 2010 will get better, for we are always hopeful that things will improve. Our lives are so much happier and less stressful when events in our country are positive and we are not constantly bombarded with gloom & doom by the media. . We'd like to be the first to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and that our new President can lead us out of these doldrums into better days.
Best wishes for a happy & healthy Thanksgiving,
Warm regards,
Dr. Malitz, Mickey and Staff

Did you know that your sex affects your teeth? If you are a woman, you have a greater risk than a man for developing some dental conditions and related health conditions. The risk numbers are dramatically lop-sided. Periodontal disease (a chronic infection that can result in tooth and bone loss) is related to heart disease. Heart disease kills more women than men each year. The majority of diabetics are women, and periodontal disease makes diabetes worse. Saliva defends your teeth from decay-causing bacteria, but Sjögren’s Syndrome hinders saliva flow. About 75 percent of its sufferers are women.

Buying jeans and getting your teeth whitened at a shopping mall is a risky mismatch. Whitening kiosks are popping up in shopping malls and causing great concerns. Tooth whitening is the most requested cosmetic dental procedure. A dazzling smile makes you look younger and boosts your self-esteem. It also makes you seem more successful and friendlier. These benefits will not be realized if you seek treatment at a whitening kiosk. Why? Chances are the mall “technician” won’t do the procedure properly. Don’t let the scrubs they’re wearing fool you. They are costumes used for effect.

If you think your dental hygienist knows only how to clean your teeth and take x-rays, read on. Your hygienist has acquired in-depth knowledge to be a key contributor to your dental health.
A dental hygiene program is very demanding. To be a hygienist, a student must graduate from either a 2- or 4-year college. To list only a few of the courses a budding hygienist must study, depending on the state, a hygienist must pass—

It doesn't come up much in polite conversation, but saliva is important. In fact, if saliva had a theme song, it would be "You Have a Friend in Me."
Saliva—that runny stuff that fills your mouth when you think about eating a lemon or that leaves your mouth high and dry when you snore—is on the front line of defense against cavities.
Certain medications, chemotherapy, or even stress can cause your mouth to consistently dry out to dangerous levels.
Without a healthy saliva flow, decay-causing bacteria attach to the tooth surface where they quickly grow into a mob-type colony called "biofilm" that robs precious minerals from tooth enamel. When calcium and phosphorous are stolen from your teeth, the tooth surface softens, which opens a gateway for tooth decay.
A healthy saliva flow constantly bathes your teeth with enamel building minerals and lays down a protective barrier on clean teeth. Your saliva naturally contains buffers that affect the acid produced by bacteria.
Saliva flushes away waste products that could harm your teeth. It teams up with your immune system to repel bacteria that cause gingivitis, which is the beginning stage of gum disease (periodontitis). If you notice that your gums are swollen and red, you likely have gingivitis.
Saliva helps you chew and swallow food and talk. Saliva, a very important body fluid, is your best friend.
